During my many years in Pacifica, I have come to love the small town, friendly and in part, bucolic nature of life here in Pacifica. Given this, I personally find the proposal in Measure L completely out of sync with the character and values of our small coastal town.
As I have absorbed the arguments on both sides of the Measure, I have thought hard about what is an appropriate development for the old Quarry. I do like the idea of expanding the existing fabric of the Rockaway area including various public spaces such as a Town Square and the like. A nice mix of smaller scale commercial uses with some restaurants, quaint shops, office and civic spaces would seem to fit. I even support housing and some smaller scale lodging as an integral part of a successful land use plan, perhaps above the commercial spaces or in row houses adjacent to the commercial area. Perhaps this vision could be implemented similar to what has already occurred in Rockaway where builders build out various parcels that make up the development so upon completion the development really comes off as a district built over time.
Why we don't mandate this type of approach as a Community mystifies me and many of my friends. 355 homes and a similar amount of lodging is totally out of scale with our small town coastal character.
